Our History

A Legacy of Service and Hope

The Foundation was established in 1992 by the Zonta Club of Nassau, following a request from Dr. Perry Gomez, Director of the National AIDS Programme. His vision was to create a dedicated NGO to assist in the national effort to combat HIV/AIDS.

In 1997, Imperial Life donated property at 23 Delancey Street, which became the Foundation’s permanent home. The site included three buildings — two of which were renovated through funds raised by the Red Ribbon Ball.

  • Building One houses the Foundation’s offices and a Food & Clothing Bank that supports those in need.
  • Building Two serves as a conference and meeting space, hosting support groups, small classes, and community gatherings.
  • The third building was later demolished due to safety concerns.
Milestones & Achievements

Turning Hope into Action

The Foundation’s early successes included providing AZT treatment to HIV-positive pregnant women during the 1990s. This initiative reduced mother-to-child transmission of HIV from 30% to under 1%, marking a major victory in HIV prevention in The Bahamas.

Another significant achievement was the creation of a temporary home for orphaned boys affected by HIV/AIDS. The home provided a safe, loving, and stable environment for children in need, blending care and compassion with privacy and dignity.

Our Partnerships

Over the years, the Foundation has earned respect both locally and internationally for its impactful work. We maintain strong partnerships with organizations such as:

We are also proud to have the unwavering support of corporate Bahamas and a dedicated network of over 30 volunteers who assist in our outreach, events, and programs.

Our Mission

Empower, Educate and Eliminate Stigma

By 2010, after close consultation with the National HIV/AIDS Programme, the Foundation shifted its focus from residential care to a community-based outreach model. This change reflected evolving global best practices, as more families began caring for orphaned children, and separating HIV-positive youth was no longer seen as beneficial.

Recognizing the growing need to support HIV-positive adolescents, the Foundation opened an Outreach Centre in February 2010, which continues to operate today. The centre provides education, counseling, and medical adherence support for young people living with or affected by HIV/AIDS.

Over 100 adolescents are now part of the programme, which aims to help them accept their diagnosis, take responsibility for their health, and live positive, empowered lives.

With 33 years of experience, the Bahamas AIDS Foundation continues to lead with compassion and commitment. Our focus remains on education, treatment adherence, and youth empowerment — breaking stigma and building a healthier, more hopeful Bahamas for generations to come.

Our Vision

Leading with Education, Prevention & Compassion

Our vision is to be the premier NGO to provide education and awareness, to assist in prevention, treatment and cure and to provide support for people living with HIV/AIDS.

In 1994 Imperial Life Financial (Colina) became our major partner and pledged to host an annual fund raiser (Red Ribbon Ball) for the Foundation. The first Red Ribbon Ball was held in 1994. Over the years this event has become the major fund raiser for the Foundation.
