Education & Awareness
This programme focuses on raising HIV/AIDS awareness and promoting knowledge, especially among young people and in schools.
- Commissioning and distributing children’s story-books to primary and junior high schools covering HIV/AIDS, stigma & discrimination.
- Art-based awareness projects (e.g., “Resilience” paintings by adolescents; a Junkanoo Quilt by 250 children from multiple islands).
- Know Your Status” (KYS) public awareness campaigns & free HIV testing at universities.
- Annual events like a Human Red Ribbon formation on World AIDS Day and a Candlelight Vigil.
Outreach Programme
Outreach Programme for Adolescents
This programme targets HIV-positive adolescents who are “at-risk” due to non-adherence to medication and other vulnerabilities.
- After-school programme (5 days/week) with homework assistance, computer access, study groups.
- Home, school and hospital outreach—monitoring, counselling, peer support, individual & family therapy.
- Hot meals, food & clothing bank, job/life skills training, adherence support to medication.
Medication Programme
Support for Adherence and Care
While the government (Ministry of Health of The Bahamas) provides free HIV medication, the Foundation supports prevention efforts including PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) and PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis).
- Education about ARV therapy and prevention tools such as PrEP and PEP.
- Emphasis on combining medication with safer-sex practices and regular HIV testing.
Opportunities
Be the Change That Makes a Difference
The following volunteer opportunities are available:
- Trained teachers to tutor students for BJC’s and BGCSE’s between 4-6pm.
- Trained tutors to assist/oversee students doing homework and assignments between 4-6pm.
- Share your skills or talents with young people, e.g. music, carpentry, etc.
- Join a committee, e.g. Education, Membership, Fundraising
- Provide work experience for a young person.
- Mentor a young person.
- Sponsor a child.
- Participate in Foundation events, e.g. Fun Run Walk Cycle, Annual Jumble Sale
- Donate gently used clothing and shoes and dry goods for the food bank
- Partner with us to sponsor the Red Ribbon Ball, the Red Tee Charity Golf Tournament, and the World AIDS Day Activities etc.
- Donate prizes for events such as the Annual Raffle, Silent Auction at the Red Ribbon Ball and the Red Tee Charity Golf Tournament.
- Partner with us to provide meals, examination fees, clothing and shoes, textbooks, dental and eye care and toiletries for the adolescents in our Outreach Programme.
